Stay on Top of Pool Cleaning!

Many customers are not completely knowledgeable of pool cleaning frequency in Tucson, AZ. They often fail to schedule cleaning, and when their pumps fail due to debris buildup, it often becomes a nasty and expensive surprise. Pool cleaning is an important part of maintenance. Here are five essential pool cleaning tasks and how often you should perform them:

  • Spot clean: Do this as you see the need. If wind drives tree branches and leaves into your pool, scoop them up before they circulate into your pump. The same is true if you notice a bit of algae growth or excessive debris of any type. Removing it as you see it only takes a few minutes and reduces strain on your pump.
  • Shock treatments: Unusual circumstances call for more frequent shock treatments. A big pool party, pets using the pool or heavy rain storms often call for extra shock treatments. Besides preserving your pump and skimmer systems, they also make your pool more pleasant and safer for users.
  • Cleaning skimmers: This should be done daily, although if you do not have any trees near your pool, you may be able to get away with doing it just a few times a week. However, since the effects of dirty skimmers are often unpleasant, daily cleaning produces the best results. Once your skimmers become clogged, they’ll work much less effectively and you’ll risk your filtration system malfunctioning and your pool becoming unusable.
  • Vacuuming: Pools near shade trees or natural water sources need vacuuming about once a week. In some cases, you may have to complete this chore twice a week, which often translates into frequent heavy labor. This removes dirt but also brings water back to a good pH balance. Weekly vacuuming helps preserve tiles, too.
  • Cleaning pumps: At least twice during each swimming season, and especially after heavy use, you should clean and backwash your pumps. Backwash is done according to pump specifications and when your pump reaches a particular pressure. Generally, once pressure rises into the 40s, it is time to backwash. Like vacuuming, this is often another big job and involves really opening up the pumps to check pipes and remove debris.

Regular pool cleaning prevents the formation of algae and maintains proper filtration. There is no such thing as “too clean” when it comes to pools, and you may want to clean more frequently.
